Armordon^® is ideal for use in combination with other materials. However, to perform as a single system, Armordon^® frequently has to be bonded to metals including steel and aluminium or to ballistic grade ceramic.

As a result of a development programme, Don & Low are now confident that they have found two methods to bond Armordon^® to these other materials.

The unique properties of the Armordon^® tape, have allowed us to develop a system which can facilitate a strong bond to the steel, aluminium or ballistic ceramic. This method offers the ability to carry our thermal consolidation and bonding in a one-step process, which can be considerably advantageous.

For those who prefer the more traditional adhesive method, extensive testing has resulted in identification of an adhesive as a solution to a number of bonding dilemmas.

Over the last year, Don & Low have been continually developing their Armordon^® product. Working with the aim of altering the properties of the material, the Company has introduced a new grade which demonstrates excellent adhesion at lower processing temperatures. As a result, greater resistance to delamination is achieved with lower process energy costs. The added features allow the exploration of new market opportunities and opens routes into an even wider range of applications.

Following initial sponsorship of the Formula Student Team at the University of Dundee, Armordon^®, is now fully incorporated into the latest race car developed by the DRIVE (Dundee University Race Innovation and Vehicle Engineering) team.

For the last year, the students have been working with Armordon^®, incorporating the material into the car wherever possible. With high strength and low weight, the team hope the use of Armordon^® in their design will make the car lighter, and ideally faster, giving them the edge over other engineering groups competing in the Formula Student Challenge at Silverstone this summer.

More easily handled than other composite materials, along with other attributes, Armordon^® is perfectly engineered for this high-specification market.

Don & Low are pleased to announce their support of the University of Dundee’s Formula Student DRIVE team.

The Formula Student competition challenges mechanical engineering students to design and build a Formula-style racing car.

Armordon^® self-reinforcing polypropylene (srPP), manufactured by Don & Low, is the ideal material for the automotive market. High impact strength and low density, makes Armordon^® the preferred choice where strength and weight saving are key parameters. Completely recyclable, Armordon^® also offers significant environmental benefits.

The students will use the material to manufacture a variety of parts for their car, and hope to make significant improvements to both design and performance.
